What You Need to Know About STA Accreditation (and Why It Matters)

When you’re investing in a timber frame home, you want to know it’s being built to the highest standards. That’s where STA accreditation comes in.

At Turner Timber, we’re proud to be a STA Assure Gold Member and STA Site Safe company. It’s our way of showing customers that every frame we design and manufacture meets rigorous industry standards for quality, safety and reliability.

What is the STA?

The Structural Timber Association (STA UK) represents many of the UK’s leading timber framing companies. Its goal is to raise awareness of timber as a sustainable, low-carbon way to build, and to make sure the industry keeps to the highest standards.

By setting out clear technical standards, training and accreditation schemes, the STA helps make timber frame engineering safe, efficient and consistent across the country.

The STA also plays a key role in supporting the UK’s net zero goals by 2050, promoting timber as one of the most environmentally responsible building materials available.

What is the STA Assure Accreditation?

The STA Assure scheme is the STA’s independent Quality Assurance Programme. It’s designed to give confidence to everyone involved in timber construction, from self-builders and developers to insurers and warranty providers.

STA Assure isn’t just a badge. It’s a detailed competency and compliance framework that checks companies on every part of their work. It covers:

  • Design: Structural integrity, accuracy and compliance
  • Manufacture: Precision, consistency and material traceability
  • Installation: On-site safety and good practice

There are three levels of accreditation: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Turner Timber proudly holds Gold, the highest standard.

This means our quality systems, manufacturing processes and on-site work all meet or go beyond current legislation and regulatory requirements.

Why STA Accreditation Matters for Self-Builders and Developers

Whether you’re planning your first self-build, managing a development or overseeing a renovation, STA accreditation gives you confidence that your timber frame company is working to the highest standards of quality, safety and compliance.

Here’s what that means for you in practice.

1. Proven Quality Standards

STA Assure members meet or go beyond the legal and technical requirements for timber construction. Regular audits check that design, production and site work all meet those standards.

In short, you’re working with a company that’s proven to deliver consistent, high-quality results, not one that just says it does.

2. Warranty and Insurance Confidence

STA Assure Gold is officially recognised by the NHBC and all major UK warranty providers, including LABC Warranty, Premier Guarantee and Self-Build Zone.

That means your build can move through approvals more smoothly without the need for extra paperwork or delays. It also gives lenders, insurers and warranty providers confidence that your project meets the highest technical standards.

3. Health, Safety and Site Protection

Accredited members must meet the STA Site Safe standard, which checks that all on-site work follows HSE and CDM rules.

Site Safe protects timber structures during construction, reducing risks from weather, fire and poor handling. For you, that means a safer site and a stronger, reliable home.

4. Skilled, Trained Installers

STA members can only work with installers who’ve successfully completed the STA’s Installer Training Scheme (ITS).

This means your frame is built by qualified professionals who understand the right methods, tools and safety steps. Every bolt, brace and beam is fitted by people who know exactly what they’re doing.

5. Investment Protection

Building a home or development is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make. STA accreditation protects that investment by giving you independent proof of quality, third-party audits and ongoing checks.

It also improves resale confidence. Future buyers, lenders and insurers will know your home was built by a company that meets recognised industry standards.
